Grand Casino, Monte Carlo, Monaco
In a day in age where bigger, bolder and brighter seems to equate to better in the high-stakes world of casino construction, it is very refreshing to know that the world’s most beautiful casino was actually around long before Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Macau, or any other famous gambling destination of today.
The Grand Casino in Monte Carlo, Monaco, is hands down the most attractive gaming house every constructed on the globe, and the most ironic part about it—at least to guys like Steve Wynn—is the Grand Casino didn’t even start out as a casino. It was built in 1878 by Charles Garnier, the man who built Paris’ operate house, with the purpose of serving as an opera house.
Today, after an extensive refurbishing inside, the Grand Casino stands out as one of Europe’s most visited gaming houses; and not only because of its size and general appeal, but because of its 19th century architecture and rich history.
During the early 1900s, gambling was illegal around most of the world. People were cramming into speakeasies and dedicated flophouse rooms and saloons to do their gambling. And although this towering monument in Monte Carlo stands today as the world’s premier casino, the citizens of Monaco aren’t even allowed to gamble within its walls. Outsiders are more than welcome, but residents need to check out an
online casino for alternatives when they have the urge to gamble.
Viewing the exterior of this casino-slash-opera-house-slash-ballet-center, one might assume this is a luxurious castle from the days when kings and queens ruled ironfisted over the land. You might even think that it’s a museum or a political state house.
With its castle-like ambiance, 28 onyx columns, large atrium, marble-paved surroundings, and its gold and red décor, this 133-year-old casino has stood the test of time and easily bests modern-day gambling hubs like the Bellagio in Vegas, the Wynn Macau, and the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas.
Walking through the doors of the Grand Casino, visitors arrive in the lavish atrium, which then leads them into the Salle Garnier – the building’s original opera house, where ballet recitals are also held. Further into the stunning structure, guests arrive in a classic casino. And if it looks like something you’d see in a James Bond film, that’s because this casino has been in James Bond films, the most recent being Casino Royale.
Of course, as beautiful as the Grand Casino is, it’s only one of many astonishing gaming houses throughout the world. If you would like to know more about casinos and gambling in general,
